What will happen to planeth earth if aseroid or another planet collide with the earth?

One of the predictions regarding the 2012 end of the world expectations is that a large body form outer space will collide with our planet. This body may be a massive asteroid or more probably a planet. The reason for the collison is taht the planeth earth will be on the path of the other planet. If this expecation comes true the consequences for our planeth as well for us would be devistating unless we take the proper steps in order to eliminate the risk of collision.
