This is Tricia Rose's segment at the State of the Black Union 10th anniversary. It was the morning panel and took place in Los Angeles. Listen to Professor Rose as she talks about issues of the economy, hip-hop, and urban culture along with explaining how they all effect each other. • @Tsugua21 hmmm..I think you might want to play this on loop, because it seems you haven't heard a damn thing this woman just rapped on the State of Hip Hop in a For Profit economy. She is challenging us to move beyond present conditions and imagine/work for better conditions. I mean Goddamn, what is your message trying to point out, that she is out of touch because she is applying a passionate critique of Hip Hop through the vernacular of White Standard English?

  • @FuckUtube4Life2010 actually no, I'm a white man. See, there are some of us out there who focus more on a woman's intellect than her own looks, the latter of which winds up as too arbitrary anyways.

  • @cajayson8301 lol. are you a black woman?

  • @FuckUtube4Life2010 I'm unfamiliar with Harris-Lacewell's work to make any comment on how her intelligence rates juxtaposed with Rose. As for who is more attractive, who gives a crap? I'm not here to compare looks but to comment on a woman's academics. Whichever scholar is hotter makes no difference on a major topic like sexualization in rap/hip hop music.

  • @cajayson8301 is Melissa Harris-Lacewell out of touch? who do you think is smarter between these two women? who do you think is more attractive?

  • @Tsugua21 explain if she's "out of touch" why she has published successful works on the topic, receives invitations to numerous events explaining the hip hop culture and has a professorship at one of the top universities in this country? People like me who studied under Dr. Rose recognize the very reason why she is an emerging celebrity scholar. What are you besides one of many juvenile ranters spouting ignorance on youtube?

  • This women out of touch and just want to hear her self talk, and the funny part is the dumbass audience is clapping. She would get laughed out off any urban neighborhood in this country. Rap is not the problem, the break down of the family of the is (No employed dad at home). All rap does is talk about the current condition of the community (rappers are just messengers). These black people think that putting on a suit and talking white makes you smarter.

  • @lstrum when I graduated, I personally thanked her at my commencement. They read off what you want to say. For me, they did include "Jason thanks Dr. Rose for her inspirational, academic talent" (believe those were my words)

  • @cayjayson8301 What a fortunate experience for you. I can only imagine what you walked out of her class with. A true gift!

  • @lstrum You said it all....with every professor I had at UCSC, no matter how intellectually gifted they were, NONE of them touched Dr. Rose. Bar none my best instructor, favorite role model in my collegiate career. Anyone who enrolls in a course with her surely comes out of that class a changed person and for the better.
