Details beneath the lyrics.
-------------------------------

On your last dime
A drawn out sigh
Not every song is a lullaby

'Round and around
Around it goes
There will be highs and there will be lows

Ooh when you need, need it most
You're out in the cold and you're all exposed
I can be your hideaway
I won't ask for any more

There's no secret knock
No password
Just call my name and you will be heard

It's not on the shore
On a private way
Or a boardwalk stroll down on Cape May

Ooh when you need, need it most
You're angry as hell and you feel exposed
Let me be your hideaway
I won't ask for any more
I won't ask for any more
------------------------------------

I arrived in Ocean City, NJ mired in a songwriting slump of sorts. Words always come harder than melody, but this was even more pronounced. Virtually everything that arrived was immediately rejected by my internal editor. Those few songs I was able to cobble together didn't have the organic feel that the good ones do.

The only sure thing I had in my back pocket was this guitar and melody arrangement. Still, it wasn't until about 2/3 of the way through our vacation, while replaying it over and over again in my head as I put my son to sleep, that I finally figured out what the song wanted to say. Ultimately, it was the vacation itself that finally pulled the lyrics from the shadows and onto my notepad.

Considering the subject matter and the inspiration, I had no choice but to set it to a slideshow of vacation photos. ;-)

I may eventually add more to this piece, but for now I wanted it to stand alone in its purest form. Please accept my apologies for some mild background noise. My kids had played with some of the knobs on the audio interface and I tracked before realizing it.

Thanks for all the friendship and support.

Justin

  • You deliver this kind of song so well. I could never hit those high notes. Nice nuance all along the way.

  • @archtopbrownie Thanks a lot. I can't really hit them either without cheating and using falsetto. ;-)

  • hey man! sorry it's taken me awhile to get around to listening to this one. I just got married, and i have been super busy as you can imagine haha. Your production is getting really good! I'm really impressed with your vocals on this song. Really good job, Justin.

  • @shroomage34 No worries, Josh. Thanks for taking a breaking out of your honeymoon period to stop by. Oh, and congratulations!

  • What a beautiful song!! This song makes me feel serene and calm and yet with a little touch of melancholy, which I love. Your voice and guitar playing are so very soothing to me. A marvelous video with endearing pictures of beautiful children!!

Thank you for the wonderful experience. ~~Kumhui

  • @kumhuimusicgirl You are too kind! I really appreciate all the support, Kumhui, from the comments to the subscription. I apologize to be tardy in expressing my gratitude, but I assure you that it in no way reflects the depth of it.

    Thank you.

  • I cant beleive that I have not stopped by to listen to this original before.

I really liked the opening gentleness of the picking. Beautiful family Justin, I know you are very proud.

Its was a wonderful song and filled with wonderful emotion.

A slow peice indeed and this one screams of cello to really bring out that emotion this peice could achieve. Like you I dont have the means to add all of those instruaments on a whim.

I personally like the acoustic raw stand alone songs.
