Born Grace Stansfield in 1898 in Rochdale, Lancashire. She made her first stage appearance in 1905 and made her first film in 1931. Gracie was awarded the CBE in 1938 ,during WWII she entertained troops and travelled as far as New Guinea. After the war she set up home on the Isle of Capri, she cut down on her performances but still performed to packed houses into her 70's. Her final appearance was at the 1978 Royal Variety Show, in February 1979 gracie was made Dame Commander of the British Empire. She died 7 months later at her home in Capri at the age of 81.

  • Yes! the incomperable Gracie Fields. My late dad who came from Cheshire, taught us taught us the art of listening to and appreciation of the voice of 'our Gracie'. Gone are the days we would listen to the wireless, there was always a song from the lassie who was loved by all of Lancashire [and Cheshire too] Gracie Fields. I cannot look at an Aspadestra without hearing her voice.
