Iraqi Maqam
Maqam Hijaz Shaytani
Hamed al-Sa'adi
c. 1990s, Baghdad, Iraq

The Maqam Hijaz Shaytani (transposition of the hijaz on G) is a short piece derived from the Maqam Hijaz and is sung to a poem in classical Arabic, accompanied by the 4/4 wahda rhythm. The poetry sung here is attributed to the Abbasid era jurist Imam al-Shafi'i (8th century). It is followed (at 4:25) by a rhythmic peste, al-Nawm Muharram ("sleep is forbidden to my eyes"), in hijaz mode and 4/4 wahda rhythm, composed by Mulla 'Uthman al-Musili.

If their caring for you is conditional,
Leave them and do not lament their friendship.

Friends can be replaced and with abandonment comes comfort,
And in the heart there is patience for the cruel beloved.

If purity of heart is not in their nature,
Then there is no good in intimacy that comes forced.

Not all whom you desire have passion for you in their heart,
Nor all whom you have trusted are as sincere.

Peste, al-Nawm Muharram:

Sleep is forbidden to my eyes,
Since my love has abandoned me. (Refrain)

Woe on me, this wound will never heal
The wound in my heart will never heal.

Refrain

Oh God, why don't you write it as my destiny
To be with my first love.

Vocals: Hamed al-Sa'adi
Santur: Ghazi Mahsub
Joza: Suhayb al-Rejab
Tabla: Fadhil al-Sa'adi

Hamed 'Ashur Daghir al-Sa'adi was born in the Bab al-Sheikh district of old Baghdad in 1956. He grew up in a traditional working-class neighborhood where the Iraqi Maqam was popular. During his youth, he listened intently to maqam recordings and attended performances of masters such as Rashid al-Qundarchi, Najm al-Sheikhli, Muhammad al-Qubbanchi, Hasan Khaiwka and Yusuf Omar. Since then he has professionally performed and recorded maqam performances both abroad and in Iraq, where he currently resides. Muhammad al-Qubbanchi (d. 1989) described him as the "best link in the continuity of the art of the Iraqi Maqam over the ages," and Yusuf Omar (d. 1987), who had a great influence on al-Sa'adi's traditional style of singing, purportedly named him as his successor before he died. Hamed Al-Sa'adi is perhaps the only surviving maqam singer capable of performing the entire repertory today.

  • Thanks for the translation. Please, if it's possible, write the first few lines in Arabic too. I would try to play it on santour in future. By the way, shouldn't the 6th line read," Then there is no good (point) forming forced intimacy? "

    Thanks again.

  • Literally it's more like "Then there is no good in intimacy that comes forced."

I sent you a message with a link to the Arabic transliteration.

  • wonderful Maqam;

What a pity,I don't know Arabic. Can you translate only a few line into Farsi, English, or Spanish please.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks. I'll give it a shot:

If their caring for you is conditional,

Leave them and do not lament their friendship.

Friends can be replaced and with abandonment comes comfort,

And in the heart there is patience for the cruel beloved.

If purity of heart is not in their nature,

Then there is no good from forced intimacy.

Not all whom you desire have passion for you in their heart,

Nor all whom you have befriended are as sincere.
