Thanks for this. I thought Colin had amazing power, determination, and a great chin. Very unlucky to have lost to McCrory (I thought he won at least the first fight and possibly the second) and only cuts ended his career. One of my all time favourites
@simondgrass Duran was welterweight world champ at the time of this fight and later won the W.B.C. middleweight title in 1989, so washed up? To quote, Colin Hart: The Sun's boxing writer and has years of knowledge, all first hand: "Laing was one of many British boxers who should have won world titles, Dave Charnley and "Bomber" Graham, among others!" "Laing was probably the greatest British fighter never to win the big one; A brilliantly talented boxer, but wayward" Enough said?
@copperpotbaby He beat a battle-worn Duran, a Duran that didn't take Laing seriously and was pretty much finished by this time (look at his record post-fight). Laing in this fight just wasn't as tough as Jones......
I suppose Lewis was in a poor division for 10 years?? Eubank did everything possible as did Calzaghe. In fact, I'd probably say Calzaghe was the most talented boxer of recent years. I appreciate your comments, but I don't think they hold much water.
@simondgrass Eubank dogged the very best and so defended his title about 40 odd time; Bruno used to put bums on the canvas, mostly, inside the first two rounds; Minter was lucky and laing could've beaten him; Lewis won in a poor heavyweight division and, currently, Khan and Haye hold the worse valued belts but are treated like they are number ones! Laing may not have been dedicated; he threw his talent in the dust bin, but he beat a great!
@copperpotbaby I've boxed since I was eight years old and was head coach at my dad's gym for three years so I think I know a bit at the very least. Take a look at all the other boxers that have graced these shores and re-think your comment. That is all....
@simondgrass Maybe you should enter the London Marathon, but don't train and stay up until 3 a.m. the night before, then how would u perform? I realise that u know nothing about boxing as u seem to think that it's similar to having a punch up; Hardest prevails? Boxing is an art; You have to be disciplined and dedicated in-order to learn and use a technique- In other words, having a professional approach! Jones was a very a good fighter who could be guaranteed to last the full 15 or 12 rounds.
@simondgrass You didn't read my comment properly because I wrote that he preferred the high life just too much; meaning, that his fight preparations went out the window for most of his other fights! He used to show-boat and drop his hands because he knew how good he really was! You and i are still taking notice of him, just because he was the greatest! He beat Duran and wasn't he great?
@simondgrass Gene Tunney the man who beat Jack Dempsey, said Wilde was the best boxer he ever saw! The Mighty Atom was voted best British fighter of 2oth century by Boxing news.
Ha Ha Ha!! They just cant help trying to show off, can they. The only one who could get away with it was Mohamidd 'the dragon' marciano thick lips.

@dan32113 Jimmy Wilde was a legend but Benny Lynch also won that title, a bit earlier, but tragedies interrupted his career and he was dead by 30!
