Lots of ways to answer this. "Slack key" refers to the style of playing, in the same way that "flamenco" would. The term is a translation from Hawaiian "ki ho'alu," so it is always associated with Hawaiian guitar music. The term stems from the practice of retuning the guitar to make a song easier to play. A different tuning also might make a tune more colorful, depending on whether a string is played open or stopped. There are said to be about 40 different slack-key tunings.
