This is a beloved song by John Denver from about 1980. It appears on the "Forever John" CD which was released in 1998, and was part of a 12 song selection from the archives from 1969-1980 collected by Mike Omansky.

It's a wonderful collection that gives the listener a tour of John's early years in his youthful sounding voice, to the beginning of his "mature" voice. This song was also part of an album that he had been working on, that was ditched by RCA in favor of a country oriented album (Some Days Are Diamonds) due to the fact that Country Music had taken off due to Urban Cowboy's tremendous success.

After listening to this song, you wind up wishing that RCA had gone with the original concept. Also, I only included one photo in the slideshow. I had prepared a number of images, but found that the words and tone of the song change too much to effectively show the song with a theme, and synching might be a problem as well.

So for purposes of expediency in uploading the song, I took a photo of the CD and included that as the image that represents this song. I hope you enjoy!

  • I love this song, I had never heard it either. Thanks alot guys.

  • @quintanazuz You're welcome. Thanks to John Denver as well. I had never heard of this song either when the CD came out in 1998. I had heard it was supposed to be released in 1980 right after the "JD" album, but RCA scrapped it in favor of that Country album that he ultimately did instead.

  • @recyclecongress ok I just saw this and with a little Google search I found your song. I am not sure if it was sung by JD or not, I don't think it was, but it was sung by James Rogers I think in 1973. I tried to post the link here but it doesn't work, please search for FLY EAGLE FLY...My Tribute to American Eagles

  • @arshad98 Well this version is by JD. I'm a lifelong fan of his and know that for fact. I checked out "Fly Eagle Fly" and it's different than this one and James Rogers is a country singer. It's more of a patriotic theme, whereas this song is a expression of John's love for being free using flying as a metaphor. The song is attributed to "unknown" on the CD. John had recorded an album in 1980ish with this song as part of the collection, but RCA opted for "Some Days Are Diamonds" instead.

  • @jrssjdca I do understand that this song you posted is by JD but recyclecongress asked about Fly Eagle Fly and where he could find it, he gave the lyrics "Fly eagle fly.... wont you spread your freedom wings across the sky..... don't let 'em bring you down, they'll chain you to the ground" so that song was sung my James Rogers :) Peace

  • @arshad98 Yeah, that exchange from recyclecongress was from a year ago I just noticed. And the song you referenced indeed sung by James Rogers. Nice clear voice! Take care.

  • Lol, a year later & I'm still looking for that song. They used to play it on radio late 70's- and it sounded like John Denver. But no, the version I'm speaking of is NOT by James Rogers though it has the same lyrics. Ironic that the radio station had the song, but its evidently not available elsewhere. ♫ Fly eagle fly... wont you spread your freedom wings across the sky... don't let 'em bring you down...they'll chain you to the ground...♫

  • Does any one know the song that was at the end of the Tribute Show after his death. They interviewed his family and friends was this the song?

  • I found this song on the Forever John album a couple of years after he left us.

Being an avid follower, I could not believe the words or that I had not found it earlier.

    Far out!!
