Teddy Roosevelt's daughter was considered the living embodiment of the Gibson Girl, even if some of her antics like jumping fully clothed into swimming pools shocked people of the time.

In 1901, when Anna Taylor went over Niagara Falls in a barrel, and Carry Nation sold miniature hatchets in the Senate gallery, the "Gibson Girl" saw these revolutionary gestures as what they were - symptons of neurosis and impending decline.

"Gibson Girl" had dignity, a quality woman. She read dignified historical novels like "To Have and To Hold" and "When Knighthood Was in Flower". She was an aristocrat and a sticlker for gallant behavior. Her appearance was proud and haughty, suggesting that she was a prize worth make some effort to win. Her clothing covered her from neck to heels but without any suggestion of puritanism, Gibson Girl had no stomach at all.

@LearningMum No offense but the paintings don't seem that hard to match in appearance, except for the tiny waist. But even then, that type of figure had been tried to been achieved through corsets long before his paintings. I think the gibson girls are much prettier than to day's beauty ideals.

I find it so sad that for so many years women tried to look like someone who wasn't even real and the creation of some man.

@LearningMum well, the Gibson Girl wasn't only his creation, it was more the natural developement of fashion at the time. I think the fashion that already existed and his creations just influenced each other. Gibson painted women who were considered stylish back then, his paintings appeared in newspapers and magazines and other women copied their looks. just like today. and years later the beauty ideal of the time was named after his paintings.
