"Petrified" documents a visual art performance event organized by CCIBA (the Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts at Stellenbosch University), as part of CCIBA's Masterclass and Symposium on the Graphic Novel (May 2010), coordinated by Andy Mason and Lieve Vanleeuw.
Thirty-two comic artists from Cape Town and Durban participated in the event, which was facilitated by Jesse Breytenbach, Pete Woodbridge, Mogorosi Motshumi and Swiss comic art maestro JP Kalonji. Music by Cabins in the Forest

The artists were tasked with creating an 8 page comic based on the work of Petrus Nooi, a sculptor who works in concrete and sells his pieces from his yard next to the road that connects the wine-growing university town of Stellenbosch with the impoverished informal settlement of Khayelitsha.
The artists began by sketching in the sculpture yard, after which they broke into four groups, each responsible for two pages of the comic. The final art was produced on 1.8X1.25m Corex boards in acrylic paint and markers. The venue was the Old Cement Factory in Phillippi on the Cape Flats.
"Petrified" will be published by CCIBA in its forthcoming comic "3Ayhe!" produced in collaboration with the Cape Codes audiodrama collective.
