With vocals by Gordon Goodman, Jack Best and the Pennsylvanians, "A Visit from St. Nicholas", also known as "The Night Before Christmas" and "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" from its first line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, although the claim has also been made that it was written by Henry Livingston, Jr. The poem, which has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American", is largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today, including his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and names of his reindeer, as well as the tradition that he brings toys to children. Prior to the poem, American ideas about St. Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors varied considerably. The poem has influenced ideas about St. Nicholas and Santa Claus beyond the United States to the rest of the English-speaking world and beyond. Arranged by Harry Simeone, this classic tale of children on the night before Christmas is a remarkable gem. Hope you enjoy the video. I spent 10 hours of love and creativity making it. I've had the vision of doing this for a while and hadn't seen a "Night Before Christmas video like it yet. So please don't copy my videos, rather just add to your favorites thank you!

  • The CD Christmas Magic was released in 1994. It is a double CD set and if you find a copy grab it. I am so glad I bought it on Ebay a few years ago. I had searched for years, all I had was the scratched up original vinyl from when I was a kid. The remastered CD is perfect.

  • You can find this on CD but it is rare. There was a release of the complete album called "Christmas Magic" which was a double LP back in the day and contains the complete version of this and the Meaning of Christmas. I bought it on EB a few years ago and it is a treasure. I recently saw a copy on Amazon going for $159.00 and the seller only had one copy. This music defined my childhood. It is a classic and it is a shame it has been unavailable for so long.

  • This version was apparently a special release. It's on my parents' album The Meaning of Christmas by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. The CD was just released on iTunes but it was lacking this song. : (

I ended up buying one of the other versions they did of this song. I like this one best tho. I loved this entire album. We played it every year as I was growing up. So glad to have it again.

  • I have been searching for this version on CD and I have not been able to find it. I've downloaded many versions but this is the version I've been looking for. Does anyone know where I can find it?

  • Tender and lovely. This granddaughter of Pennsylvanian Leonard Kranendonk (baritone) thanks you.

  • Brilliant mash-up, much better than Disney’s, which turns up elsewhere on YouTube.

  • Simply enchanting....

  • Wow this song takes me back to my childhood Christmas Eve...staring at the presents under the tree lit by the Christmas tree lights...just glowing. What a feeling. What a memory. Near time travel in my mind. So wonderful. Thank you for the trip back home.

  • Wonderful production. My parents had the 1954 version and that is the one burned into my brain. Until recently I didn't know who it was performed by. Thank you for introducing me to the original version which I like very much as well.

  • Yeah, I know it's animation, but it's nice to think that all of the toys shown marching out of the bag were "MADE IN THE U.S.A."!

Once again, the tenor from 6:00 to 6:26 is wonderful. I have been in several groups which performed this, some good, some not so much. I played lead trumpet and sang bass in various combinations, and I can tell you as a pro that Fred Waring was a genius. He was an awesome director and he wrote cool things, too.

Thanks for posting; you should have a million views.
