Author and magician Alan Moore discusses the virtually unknown but enormously talented Edwardian artist and magician Austin Osman Spare on The Culture Show from the BBC.
A fantastic snapshot of this famous artist and occultist. Also, a good introduction for the neophyte to the world of A. O. Spare. Thank you for uploading.
I have just recently discovered AOS! So fascinating! The artwork is disturbing and actually powerful! His automatic writing is impressive as well. He is probably as unknown as Crowley is known!
@Artstaristic Austin is my cousin thrice removed. I think I picked up some of his skills in art and occult magic, although I prefer to paint landscapes rather than nudes.
My grandfather was a magician and my grandma was AOS's childhood sweetheart! Her name was E.Murch.Mitchell and Spare spent time doing designs (ex libris) for her! I was amazed at his artwork! I spent time with Spares sister as a child (she too was a great artist). My artwork is more towards a childish Blake style! Not exactly acceptable to mainstream churchianity and I am told magic too! However I thoroughly agree with Moore! The secretary for my Grandfather was named Moore? check out Asgaerd
It's the portraits that astounded me. I've seen thee magickal stuff all over the place in the underground occult press in thee 80s. BUT THE PORTRAITS! They just made me weep!
