Michael Tobias delivering a new bass to legendary Chicago bassist Hassan Khan. The bass he is playing is a hollow body MTD with no Magnetic pickups and only Piezos and a preamp (and of course an amplifier) producing the sounds you hear. It featured Nylon strings and if you listen to the tone it is quite spectacular in my opinion.

In response to a critic, I had to remove (was 6, now 10) posts from that critic (under different screen names that were created on the very days he posted). The video in question is the most popular video (9k views) in my account and I guess therefore a reasonable target for a person wanting to make a name for himself. I would be less than a friend to the person in the video if I did not defend what the video depicts.

Yes the person/player in question was not giving a concert and yes he was not showing his chops. He was simply trying out his new bass for the first time and he was very excited about his new aquisition and I would have reacted very much the same way. There was a performing group who were setting up and starting to play one booth away from where the video in question took place. Youi can clearly hear them toward the end of the video and they played some nice music.

I asked the critic to let me hear what he sounded like so I could have a balance to his criticism. If I criticize someone elses playing and they respond "well, what do you sound like?" I would be more than happy to answer their question to validat my own statements of criticism. In case you would like to see the video in question it is entitled "MTD NAMM 2007".

Now acknowleging the fact that others have stated that the player did not play much music, if you have something to say about the video please feel free to do so. Most of the comments are of the other basses in the video.
While I don't believe in censorship I firmly believe in good housekeeping in regards to my YouTube presentation. Anyone that posts here should keep that in mind.

Thanks for reading,

BL

  • What the people who know nothing about bass don't realize is that the reason he keeps playing the same note over and over is to quickly get a good idea of how changing the EQ affects the tone. This video means a lot more to tone freaks than it does to people wanting insane shows of skill.

  • great basses

  • I actually like the fact that Hassan doesn't blurt out a bunch of licks. He just listens to the tone of the bass and checks out the tonal possibilities. He already knows he can play!

  • mike tobias is a cousin of mine- it's weird to see his stuff on youtube.

  • it has pickups. They are just in the bridge.

  • basslabd, why do you make so much fuss about a hater on youtube, there millions of those on youtube, don't spend time on them, they like it

  • Pretty much in the bridge

  • Piezo systems give the instrument an acoustic sound. They're great for jazz or unplugged style venues but not so great if you like to slap & pop.
