It's funny, this video has over 5,000 views yet a video review of the game that was actually made when the game was released in 1995 (just search IE PC Game Frontier First Encounters in You Tube search) has only managed 54 - what's that all about?!
Good 'ol Astor. The vista of waking up in your ship for the first time, watching Astor rise (or was it set?) over the horizon of Merlin is one of those images from classical computing that will remain in my mind for many years to come.
Ive no idea cause it ran on 0.73 just fine, I just went through the setup screen then ran the .bat file and it just worked, however I don't use it as my primary method of play, since JJFFE run it a whole lot smoother and I think it removed that backwards autopilot bug which forced you to buy a new ship, the MIDI is bugged somewhat in JJFFE where it isn't in DB but that's a small price to pay.

How did you get it to run in DOSBox? I've yet to see a version (including 0.73) that got past the intro screen!

Actually Dosbox can run it nowadays but it runs a lot smoother on JJFFE

This brings back so many good memories...

DOSBox is unable to run FFE, but with JJFFE and other programs available that isn't such a problem.
