ifmusicbe. I hope you are right. However, the Austrian glitterati were in awe of her when she took center stage at the Opernball. The Austrian establishment are all powerful in the field of opera. They said that Netrebko caused a bigger sensation in Vienna even than Mozart.

When I say Netrebko is a flash in the pan, I just mean that no one will be talking about her in a decade or so. Not true of Kiri. Yes, unfortunately, Kiri is probably past the graceful exit stage. I heard her about two years ago in a joint recital with Flicka Von Stade, and she really struggled vocally. There were a few moments of vocal opulence, in which Kiri made the earth stand still in a way only she can, but overall it was troubling. She can still retire with great pride now . . .

I don't know what people are talking about when they say she should retire! She sounds exquisite for her age. The technique even seems to be more secure and natural than when she was at her peak. I'd prefer listening to her at 65 over anyone else these days at 25. Basta!
