They had very few remaining aircraft to protect the fleet. The planes available were to be used as decoy instead.

Surface ships without air support? Clearly either total desperation or total denial of the lessons already taught by the Japanese themselves. Airpower was the key. But, suicide seemed to be okay with the Japanese during WWII so, maybe it didnt matter to them one way or the other.
