I can see the media reference, but I think it is totally misguided to claim that the media is the main thrust of this film. Clearly a wistful desire for lost youth is what motivates the character. Again, it is perfectly obvious that society judges too quickly and far too harshly. Hence the hot chocolate reference. When it all becomes too much for us to bare we simply fade away.
