Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy from 1900 to 1946 reigned over the peak of power and the downfall of the Kingdom of Italy. He brought Italy into World War I on the side of the Allies but gained almost none of the spoils that were promised. During the fascist era Italian power extended over Abyssinia and Albania and he was accorded the titles Emperor of Ethiopia and King of Albania which he renounced after the Italian defeat in 1943. He abdicated in favor of his son in the hope of saving the monarchy and went into exile in Egypt. He died in 1947 in Alexandria.
