  • @tinzan He really is isn't he. He was my first glimpse of Christ at the age of 10. I really like his portrayal for some reason.

  • I really rather like the melange and juxtaposition of questionable types from the ancient as well as the modern world in this version. From my perspective, it helps drive the point home that this is a timeless story even if you're not a Christian or don't believe in God -- Jesus was by no means the only person in history to stand up for what is right and pay the ultimate price at the hands of those whose primary (or sole) ethical imperative is the "law of the jungle."

  • I am not sure if anyone realizes this but the depiction of this whole story is more likely meant to have a lack of understanding and coherence. It is a play on the Biblical version showing the misrepresentations of Christ and of the story of the nailing of Christ to the Rood. But hey that is just my opinion.

  • I like the 1973 one better than this

  • @moookiecat "The overacting in this 1 makes me constantly aware of the fact that they r acting"

    Amen (as it were).

FWIW, seems 2 me they filmed (taped?) the stage sho pretty much as it was usually staged -- which is fine 4 live theatre, reaching the back o the house, & the top o the 3rd balcony.

Not so much when there's a camera lens 2 inches from the actors' faces.

Some1 shoulda reminded them 2 take it down a notch (or 3).

Still this has its own take on story & char's, & I love it 4 that

  • @mineiscooler no but i saw the vaginas and the needles...

  • Anyone see the bag of coke?

  • @YsoSRS14 The point was that it depicted them as Arabic stereotypes solely to get the message across that they were vile and greedy. The depiction of Romans as Nazis actually made sense as they were both imperialistic and antisemitic, not to mention the capital of Rome is still the capital of Italy. And you covered the reason why your other points are invalid.

I agree political correctness doesn't belong in arts but there's a difference between political incorrectness and just being racist.

  • The actibg really isn't strong enough here - Ted Neeley performed this with so much more anger & passion.

  • @shoufimafi64 well, in case you hadn't noticed... Jerusalem happens to be right in the middle of the Middle East... Also, will you consider it racist that they depict the Romans like Nazi Stormtroopers, or the mob that calls for Jesus' death is depicted as Jewish (Which they were...) or maybe that it mocks Christianity, when in fact it does no such thing?

Please... Political Correctness does NOT belong with the arts, and what could you call Jesus Christ Superstar but a work of art?
