For the third year in a row we gathered on a small hillside in Pennsylvania to remember those who gave so much. "The Rose of Alabama" was written by R.R. Reed and S.S. Steele in 1846, we found it appropriate to sing this tune at "Oates Rock". Colonel William C. Oates commanded the 15th Alabama and led that regiment in a series of charges up Little Round Top on the afternoon of July 2nd 1863, only to be driven back by Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and his 20th Maine.

To the left of the 15th Alabama the 47th Alabama also made many attempts to take Little Round Top with no success. By the end of July 2nd, the Union left flank had held and many a young Alabamian had perished on that little hillside in Pennsylvania including Colonel Oates's brother John.

After the war Colonel Oates who would later become Governor of Alabama made the claim, that if only one more regiment had joined the assault we could of turned the Union flank won the battle of Gettysburg and headed for Washington, thus ending the war.
