The Israeli Knesset is about to reapprove the "Tal bill," which makes Haredi Ultra-Orthodox people exempt from mandatory military service in Israel. Instead, Haredim are expected to engage in religious and Judaic studies. This is upsetting to some military veterans, and several of them have set up a makeshift "suckers camp" in protest. Their slogan is "everyone serves," and they are demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorse a new bill requiring everyone to serve their country -- either in the military or in civil service. JN1's Sivan Raviv interviewed the protesting veterans in Tel Aviv and also spoke with Labor Party MK Avishay Braverman.

MK Avishay Braverman told us, "I came here in order to give support to this fantastic group. I've been working for a long time in the parliament in order to legislate, essentially, laws that will increase the incentive for enrollment of Ultra-Orthodox in the workforce and in the army and also Arabs with civil service, because the Israeli society is going to be partitioned. What this law was doing is, essentially, let the Ultra-Orthodox be out of the game. It's enough."

Activist veteran Boaz Nol said, "Military service is a draft in Israel. Everybody, all citizens, once they reach 18, they must go and join the army. What the government is trying to do now is to make a special bill for one specific sector, which is the Ultra-Orthodox, saying that they're studying Torah, which means that they don't have to do anything. They don't need to serve in the army. Me, my friends from all over the country, from the north, from the south, Ashkenaz (Ashkenazi Jews), Sfaraddim (Sephardi Jews), Russians, Ethiopians, all of us, when we're 18, nobody's asking us. We just go, and we serve our country. And it doesn't make sense, and it's not fair, and it's not equal that a whole sector of Ultra-Orthodox, because they wear a kippa, won't have to do anything. If my government, the same people who are going to send me to the next war, are coming and saying that one sector, the Ultra-Orthodox, doesn't have to do anything, while you have to go, then instead of being proud of my service to the country, I need to feel like a "sucker," and I don't like it."
