George Enescu (1881 -- 1955) -- Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 25
'dans le caractère populaire roumain'
1. Moderato malinconico
2. Andante sostenuto e misterioso
3. Allegro con brio ma non troppo mosso
By contrast to his two previous Sonatas, the third is pure Romanian folk music, but with a
difference - there are no real folk tunes here. Enescu chose instead to write it all himself,
annotating the score in incredible detail to explain exactly how each violinistic effect is to be
achieved. Menuhin said of these markings, that if observed, one cannot help but sound like a true
folk violinist.
The amazing writing technique of Enescu could be also heard in the piano part, which imitates
the romanian cembalo -- tzambal.
A first rhapsodic part where the heterophonic folk dialogue is at home, and the mysterious,
nocturnal world of the second movement, to the spikier rhythms of the dance like finale with its
almost savage ending, underline the all-round musical genius of George Enescu.
