Fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" Error While Trying to Boot Windows Vista by Britec

If your Windows Vista computer has encountered BOOTMGR is missing error. If the problem isnt hardware related you can fix it with relative ease as long as you have a Windows Vista DVD handy.
or you can download Vista Recovery CD below.

Download Vista Recovery CD
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
--------------------------
SOLUTION 1

- Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
- Then restart your computer.
- Set your computer to boot from DVD or CD in your BIOS.

Vista will ask you for language and keyboard layout information, after which you will be asked if you want to re-install Vista or repair your existing installation.
Select Repair. After which Vista's System Recovery Tool will start.

Select Startup Repair and let Vista do its thing! That really is all there is to it!

If that doesn't work try this:

SOLUTION 2

If the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment. To do this, follow these steps:

- Get your Vista installation DVD and pop it into your drive.
- Then restart your computer.
- Press a key when you are prompted.
- Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next
- Click Repair your computer
- Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next
- In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt
- Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then press ENTER

• If Bootrec runs successfully, it will present you with the installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes . A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.

• If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command)

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /rebuildbcd

- Restart the computer.

  • Hey, I bought a brand new Seagate 1TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200/32MB/SATA-6G off of tigerdirect. but when got it in and installed it; it woudn't let me put window 7(64) on it.so i shuted it down over night and came back to it and it just poped the message (missing BootMRG) and would let me start it past that on the hdd. Im so lost and i dont know what to do can you help me?

  • @elchamber Hey I got exact the same problem. I also tried manually and it everything seemed fine "The operation completed successfully" but still when I reboot there is this annoying message BOOTMGR is missing. So, did you figure out any effective solution or what?

  • thank you dude !

  • Worked for me, but with Windows 7 instead. Good job

  • Hey I inserted my vista recovery disk which I ordered straight from Hp, cause I have a g series notebook, once I inserted it says "this pc is not supported by the System Recovery Disk you will not be able to continue to recover this system with these disks" what can I do??

  • @elchamber Also on, DOS I have windows\system32 instead of source.

  • Didn't work. Popped in the disk. Went straight to "Windows is loading files..." Looks like it rebooted. On the "System Recovery Option," there is nothing to select. The options they give is "load drivers" and "next." I choosed "Startup Repair." Then a pop-up saying "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically." I sent information about this problem. Details say "MissingBootManager." I followed your prompt directions. Also on 02:47 what where you going to finish.

  • I HAD TO REINSTALL MY VISTA CAUSE IT WOULDN'T FIND VISTA BEFORE. AFTER I DID THAT, I FOLLOWED YOUR STEPS AND I'T'S WORKING. THANKS SOOOOOO MUCH FOR THE POST!!!! ON OTHER COMMENTS THAT SAY IT DOESN'T WORK AREN'T FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS OR EXPLORING THEIR PC (THINK PEOPLE)
