This video shows Douglas Yeo, bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, playing the serpent. He is playing a French church serpent by C. Baudouin, c. 1812 (Paris, one key). The music is the chant, "Praefatio de Ascensione Domini: from Missale Romanun, Ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concelii Tridentini (MCMXXXV). This video is excerpted from his DVD, "Approaching the Serpent: An Historical and Pedagogical Overview." For more information about this DVD, visit http://www.yeodoug.com

  • @steelpan11 Mastery of the English language = Fail. Assessment of the serpent's sound = Also lacking. But nobody's perfect. :p

  • I'm sure no one from the time that the serpent was in style played it half as well as Mr. Yeo

  • Such nice tone and control! I can see why this instrument is said to blend well with voices.
