There have been three linked attacks in Walthamstow E17 between March and May 2009. Two women were raped and beaten. The third woman, Michelle Samaraweera, was raped, strangled and killed. All attacks took place within ¾ mile of each other.

The police have linked the three attacks with a DNA profile of the offender. They will conduct a DNA sweep of men in the E17 area. This will be the London Met's biggest sweep since the Sally Anne Bowman murder. They will go door to door targeting 9,000 local homes and will ask for any men who match the suspect's description to voluntarily provide a DNA sample.

Officers believe the suspect has detailed knowledge of the E17 area and is likely to reside locally. The DNA testing is designed to eliminate as many innocent men from the investigation as possible.

Police were first contacted on 30 May 2009 at 5:50am after Michelle's body was discovered in a small park and play area along Queens Road at junction with Markhouse Road. She had been strangled and raped.

The 35-year-old's murder was quickly linked with two similar assaults in Waltham Forest.

The first was on 24 March 2009 at 1:00am as a 59-year-old woman walked to her home address close to Queens Road. She approached her front door and noticed the suspect standing nearby. She walked around him and as she entered her property he forced his way inside, raping her in her own bedroom.

The second attack happened on 22 April 2009 at 1:00am in the South Grove area. The 46-year-old victim had been walking home along Lea Bridge Road, with the suspect attempting to talk to her when she was forced into a nearby alleyway. She was raped before the suspect fled warning her not to leave the scene.

The suspect has been described as being of Asian appearance, or with dark skin, and is aged between 30 and 40 years. He may have an accent.

Detective Superintendent Vic Rae, who is leading the investigation from the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC) made the following regarding Michelle's movements on 30 May 2009:

"Michelle was last seen in Somerfield Supermarket on Markhouse Avenue, between 1:00am and around 1:15am but there are no other sightings of her between 22:00 on 29 May and the time her body was found at around 05:50 on 30 May. Police are appealing to hear from anyone who saw Michelle or who has any information which could help."
