Representative Pete Stark proposed H. Res 81 to Congress, expressing support for designation of February 12, 2011, as Darwin Day and recognizing the importance of science in the betterment of humanity. This resolution is a culmination of collaboration between Representative Stark, 2008 Humanist of the Year, and the American Humanist Association.

In a statement, Representative Stark said, "Darwin's birthday is a good time for us to reflect on the important role of science in our society. It is also a time to redouble our efforts to ensure that children are being taught scientific facts, not religious dogma, and to fight back against those who seek to undermine the science of climate change for political ends."

This resolution could not have come at a more important time. The New York Times recently reported that only 28 percent of biology teachers present evidence for evolution as recommended by the National Research Council, while 13 percent "explicitly advocate" creationism. Furthermore, with climate change quickly gaining speed, and anti-environment regulation law-makers denying its impact, a true grasp of science is the strongest defense against global warming. • DAWKINS, HITCHENS, AND HAWKING REFUSE TO DEBATE with creationists who are SCIENTISTS, such as the scientists at The Institute for Creation (ICR) Research. Dawkins and his friends only debate non-scientist creationists. ICR scientists have written excellent articles on "Vestigial" Structures, Fossils, Genetics, Mutations, "Junk DNA," Natural Selection, Age of The Earth, Emergence of New Species (but not new genes), etc., etc. Just peruse their articles archive.

  • ARE FOSSILS REALLY MILLIONS OF YEARS OLD? Popular Internet article that examines assumptions concerning fossil deposition as well as built-in assumptions involved in modern radiometric dating (not used for dating fossils but other rocks), and arguments from starlight and time. Discusses lack of both transitional forms and lack of sequence of the fossil layers. Discusses mixed species in fossils (i.e. dinosaur, reptile, mammal fossils in the same stratum conveniently ignored by evolutionists).

  • @coil311 Elect a new Rep. Complacency kills.

  • I like the general idea, but all the language about global warming should be removed. Not that I don't believe in global warming, I just think that belongs in a separate bill. Darwin is Darwin, global warming is global warming.

  • Incredibly poor audio.

  • I would contact my local representative (Jean Schmidt), but she's an idiot, plain and simple. She's a die-hard Republican conservative Christian, perhaps even a Creationist. If I sent her office a message to support this legislation, I would be wasting my breath, muscular energy of typing/dialing, and brain power. She doesn't listen to reason, rational argument, or adhere to evidence.

Any further suggestions? My representative is a complete moron.
