The only thing that surprises me here is Leinsdorf being in Boston that early. I though Munch was there at least until 63 or 64, But I do think that this along with Knoxville Summer is among Barber's best works. It stands in such contrast to the, in my view, unfortunate turn "serious" American music was beginning to take around this time. .I won't name the composers I have in mind, but their initials are JA, PG, and SR.
@moosatious commissioned by G. Schirmer in 1960 for their 100th Anniversary. Written for Browning, he played the premier with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Erich Leinsdorf, 1962 in the new Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center, now Avery Fisher Hal.
Thanks a LOT for this recording.

A great concerto in the neo-romantic tradition played by one of the great American pianists of the late 20th century - Thanks for posting!

I have this recording (vinyl). A magnificent performance! Yes, it was written for Browning.

To me, this is the definitive recording of this work. If I am not mistaken, Browning commissioned it.
