Oh it has it's comic moments, to be sure. But a comedy? I think NOT! Every tragic piece has it's comic relief. This is as tragic as tragedy comes, albeit come-uppance is not a virtue in this story! Still the poor guy gets his beautiful wife taken by a corrupt official and his thug and is shipped off to the penal colony across the ocean. What's so funny about that? Making meat pies is darkly humorous though!

Who's that singing Pretty Women at the end?

F-ing brilliant

Johnny Depp is often underestimated. He has a very unique theatrical range that is only properly tapped by Burton, to be brutally honest.

haha- I just realized the movie will have three Harry Potter Baddies!
{Helena Bohnam Carter (Bellatrix) will play Mrs. Lovett, Timothy Spall (Scabbers) as the Beadle, and Alan Rickman (do I really have to fill this in?) as Judge Turpin.}

actually Sasha Baron-cohen has trained in singing since he was like 2 ok he has been in musical theater in england for years before he created the characters in his show. so yeah don't fuck with the movie hell sweeney todd is pretty much a comedy anyway not a all out comedy but it is one of the few trully funny plays hat has been written ever.

Sorry Rumpleteazer, I couldn't find the shot I was talking about but there is another pre-pub shot of him as Sweeney on the site: johnnydepp-zone(dot)com/reeljo
hnny. I saw a shot of him there in that Adam Ant "suit". Hope it's still there by the time you get this post. -
Alan Rickman (Snape in Harry Potter) will play Judge Turpin, Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat!!) Will play Pirelli (since when is this comedy "golden boy" a trained singer?! And Pirelli is no Mr. Niceguy!) Rickman I can see, he's a "heavy", as we call them in the biz. Depp and now Borat will make this a comic farce. I still think Willem Deffoe should play Sweeney!

Knowing Burton, the movie will retain it's dark atmosphere, but the question is, will it be the RIGHT type of darkness?
Pretty Women at the end of the credits was sang by Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner.
