Do you use glycol in your system to prevent freezing? Having glycol circulating adds to the cost doesn't it? How much does a system like this cost for a household with only two people?

How about adding a solar conversion valve to the drain outlet of my existing electric water heater. Can that work well? Why do solar tanks have to be so big?

I was given some bad advice and I installed an electric water heater in my house. My energy bills are quite high compared to what they should be. Would it be possible for me to install something like this WITH my existing water heater to reduce the bills? It's an energy star model but it has an annual operating cost of over $500. I don't get a great deal of sunlight year-round as I live in the midwest.

how well does this system hold up to heavy hail? Here in central Texas golf ball sized hail is a common occurrence.
We do not use glycol, just water as the heat transfer fluid. Because it is a drainback system, the water drains back into the conditioned space in the house or garage and is safe from freezing. Systems cost around $6000 to $7000 for your size of system. Where do you live?

You can do that, and it does work well for a 2 tank system. Solar how water tanks need to be big so that when there is daily cloudy weather, you have a big enough supply of solar hot water that you don't have to go back to your electric or gas tank.

I live in the "midwest" also, and I get LOTS of sunlight:) Adding a solar hot water system to your electric tank is a perfect match, and will work well.

It is tempered glass with a little bounce to it, so very well. I have not seen any systems break from hail here in central oklahoma, however I am checking on a system tomorrow that is from the early 80's that might have broken.
