The heart of Buddhism is really relying on a spiritual guide who can show us the way towards bettering ourselves and come closer to enlightenment. The more we listen and are cooperative, the easier and swifter it becomes.
From the humble refuge seeker to the most advance Tantric practice requires guru devotion. Highest Yoga Tantric practice of Vajrayogini has 11 yogas and amongst them is Guru Yoga.
Well there is a difference between understanding the need of a spiritual guide and truly taking refuge with a spiritual guide. Rinpoche's book Gurus For Hire Enlightenment For Sales does shed some light on this subject.
We have teachers all our life - from kindergarten to tertiary education. By the same token, if we wish to embark on a spiritual path, we must have spiritual guide without whom, realisation is very difficult
Tsem Tulku Rinpoche has been working tirelessly to make Dharma grow in Malaysia and so does the students who is helping Rinpoche right now even as we speak. It is very nice to have a Spiritual Guide to train us up to face challenges so that we can be successful in whatever we may undertake in future.
Well said well said, Dharmaguy001, as I have said many times that its very blessed to have a living High Lama like Tsem Rinpoche to be around in Malaysia all the time. I rejoice for you all students to be able to be close to your Rinpoche.
and from what I have learnt from Lama Tsongkhapas life story, He actually had direct vision of Lord Manjushri. He was so humble that He doesnt believe He has the attainment to have direct vision of Lord Manjushri until He has actually consulted His Guru of the authenticity.
The Buddha taught first and foremost to rely upon oneself. Teachers are helpful for sure, but not as important as they were 1,000 years ago.

What is the point here? Even a great being like Lama Tsongkhapa needed guru(s) - so we ordinary beings definitely need one!!
