Video: September 21, 2011 marks 2,500 years since the Battle of Marathon (Greece) in 490 BC. This "Historical Minute" video is a Real-Enactment™ of the famous battle between Athens and the Persian Empire, the famous 26 mile run by Pheidippides from Marathon to Athens, and the meaning of the Athenian victory...namely, allowing Western Civilization to flourish. Enjoy!

  • Count the year "0". The 2,500th Anniversary run of the marathon will take place Oct. 31, 2010 (Marathon to Athens). Google Athens 2010 Marathon.

  • @Kretan This is true. But, it's for the same reason the millenium was celebrated worldwide on 1st Jan 2000 and not 2001. Just the round numbers make appeal to the people. Since we know this, it isn't bad. What matters is to celebrate and honour. The exact date isn't what matters first (and at the end we don't even know the exact date, since the ancient calendar is uncertain).

  • 490 BC to 2010AD is only 2499 years
