I made a playthrough last year, with a webcam, of course, of this game. This is said to be one of the worst Sonic games ever created. I have heard complaints about the controls, which aren't even that bad. The only problem with controlling something is if you're Metal Sonic. Then you can't turn very well. It's a shame, since Metal Sonic is my favorite Sonic character, that I can't race as him in this game because of just that. Also, the roster of characters could have been better. I'm sure characters like Espio the Chameleon would have been a good idea to put into the game. However, we just get robot replicas of most of the 5 original racers (Robotnik is only useable after you beat the game, but he takes part in racing with the 4 available racers anyway.) Metal Sonic and the Egg Robo already existed in previous games, but I really think the game's makers were just going for robot replicas. The game is also really easy, which is why I had to put it on Hard. there's only five tracks to race on, but there's also some nice ideas for modes in Time Attack, like Tag and Reverse. There's this thing I have with the Saturn version making you do the level twice to get both the secret character and Chaos Emerald(s). However, I got all those items by racing ONCE on a track. You know what else? This is one of the few Sonic games that don't just require any cars or Extreme Gear. This and Sonic Adventure 2 have races on foot. (Sonic Adventure 2 Battle wasn't ALL about being on foot, though). Sonic R's soundtrack isn't HORRIFICALLY bad, IMO. There are songs out there not from video games, but are really crappy to listen to (IMO, of course). I think they were going for music that suited each level, rather than music that suited the game's genre. It's okay music. I also hate that stupid Tails Doll thing everybody keeps doing, saying it's evil and haunted, but it's not even remotely creepy. Sure, it has nothing to do with the game, bu I just wanted to throw that out there. The game, I think could have used more hazards, like spikes and traps. In fact, the manual for Sonic R says that the Reactive Factory level has tricks and traps in it, but I've seen none of the sort. The only hazards, really, are water (easy to avoid) and Robotnik's/Egg Robo's projectiles. Other than that, there's nothing out to screw you over, which gives me, of course, more of a reason to play this on Hard. Anyway, the game is okay, the way I see it. I wouldn't say it's an extremely poor excuse for a Sonic racing game, or a "kick in the balls", or "one of those flicks that just barely gets you and hurts twice as much." Anyway, I want to remake this in the future, along with some other videos.
