Karna became synonymous with sin as soon as he joined hands with Duryodhana. We need a holistic picture of events. As soon as he violated the famous Yoga principle of 'Aparigrah' (not accepting gift from others), he had to side with the corruption and sinful characters. Religion is absolute, however Karna, Drona and Bhisma had misinterpreted religion; and defined their own religions. Their vows blinded them, and Karna had to get involved in all the heinous acts of Duryodhan. Karna against truth.

Karna was an even greater warrior than all of the Pandavas. His misfortune was that he sided with the wrong side. Even after he knew it, he was still devoted to fight with Duryodhana. He promised his mother that he will not kill all of the Pandavas, just fight Arjun and see who lives. She will end up with 5 sons either way. That is why he did not finish Bhim earlier on the battlefield. So arguably, he is the one that sacrificed everything for the sake of what is right and fair.
