Yonoi (Sakamoto) and Celliers(Bowie) are painfully aware of the powerful and overwhelming feelings they instantly have for each other. However, a POW camp in Java 1942 is not a place where gay love can blossom. Celliers kisses Yonoi as an act of defiance against him and as a courageous expression of his feelings for him, which dooms him to his death. In Japan, kissing is an explicitly sexual thing, not a mere romantic gesture one step up from holding hands. Kissing in public in Japan is considered the same as sexual acts in public.
