Second of a two-part series demonstrating how to create the classic Phantom of the Opera Makeup from Gaston Leroux's original novel, with inspiration from Lon Chaney's 1925 silent film. Makes a great Halloween makeup. Learn how to create three dimensional effects with simple techniques and low cost materials.
This second video covers taping up the nose to mimic Lon Chaney's look in his classic portrayal, as well as coloring, contouring, and final advice.
@jpotokar Incorrect. The wire is clearly visible in 2 of the photos of Chaney in make-up. It runs from the tip of his nose to his wig. Cameraman Charles Van Enger verified the hooks and wire apparatus. I have no idea how Michael F. Blake missed those 2 photos. I refer to the 2 pix of Chaney with arms crossed standing next to the statue of Beethoven. Even the experts make mistakes.

You don't look much like Chaney's proformance,but that's probably just because you don't have a make-up kit like Chaney's.

Why you would use wire in the first place is the question to be asked. Chaney did not use hooks, wire or anything similar to that to achieve his skull nose. Any number of books currently available, biographies on Chaney, etc all explain this in simple detail.

Please, NO ONE use wire to manipulate the nose. If you are allergic to tape, adhesive, etc, just use makeup to color the nose (ie use black eye liner to enlarge the nostrils).
DO NOT USE WIRE AROUND YOUR FACE.

These are such good tips! Thanks for sharing. I've been debating going as either Leroux's Erik of Edgar Allen Poe's Red Death on next Halloween, and this can be used for both! (Haha, I find it funny that the Red Death is the second choice, and yet is still Phantom related!)

Fish hooks and other wives tales are not correct. he used fish skin, which was then secured under the forehead of his bald front wig. he then accentuated his nostrils with makeup. he used collodion and cotton on his cheekbones which he created on a plaster cast of his own face.

You have a very very dead Christopher Walken quality.

I thought so too. But Mr. Chaney's biographer, Michael F. Blake said that Chaney glued fishskin on his nose, pulled it up, and fixed it down under his wig.
