  • love both guys here.

  • OHO FANTASTIC MINOR 3RD AT THE END! Definitely my all time favourite bass-bartitone/tenor duet :D

  • Ramey is a perfect Escamillo but sadly Carreras's days were over even before his tragic illness. To have Di Stefano as a hero is a not a good idea.

  • I was thinking Carreras is quite good in this. Everyone always talks about how he wasn't the same after his illness but I'd rather hear him than not! I saw his Fedora in 1995 at Covent Garden which was a scream but less so than Mirella Freni who was terrible that night. Samuel Ramey is great. Sometimes I find him a bit wooden.

  • carreras, in terms of timbre coinciding with range, was the most talented of the three tenors. he is fantastic in general, but in this role he is brilliant. i just hate don jose's character, such a little pussy mama's boy!! escamillo is sexy. and listen to ramey! he was also a fantastic don giovanni.

  • this one one of Carreras' signature roles....you assholes would probably praise any and every one except Carreras.....for instance I'm sure Domingo would get rave reviews from you asses in this role, i'd rather hear some one burst a fresh fart than hear Domingo shit his way through this role....;-)

  • I suggest you to listen to his 1978 Forza del destino (with Cappuccilli). Totally different from this Carmen

  • Indeed. Di Stefano was a GREAT lyric tenor whose gorgeous voice declined precipitously when he started driving his chest voice up in too-heavy roles. Did you know Di Stefano sang OTELLO once, for heaven's sake? (Verdi's, not Rossini's:) About thirty years ago, I heard a tape of the first act -- was pretty dang sad. At least Carreras hasn't gone THAT far --

  • i think i remember reading that his hero was Distefano...explains quite a bit....

  • Carreras should never have sung this role. Even before his struggle with leukemia (we must praise his courage and determination there), he sang roles that were simply too heavy for his lyrico-spinto voice. And that once-GLORIOUS instrument suffered accordingly. I've often thought that his voice at its best was the most beautiful and sensual of the so-called "Three Tenors." But I suppose the temptation to go beyond one's fach at the international level is overwhelming --
