Math-smart kids--that's what you will have if you use Singapore math! Asian students are famous for their mathematical prowess, and these are the books that they use to gain those skills. If you want your child to learn to think mathematically, not just be able to solve math problems, you will be pleased and surprised with how well your student progresses. Two big textbooks teach the concepts with happy, color illustrations--very kid friendly and activity based. It is hard for me to call these "textbooks" because they are workbooks full of fun pictures and activities! Detailed teaching notes at the bottom of the pages will give you instructions for the page, plus activities to do to reinforce the concepts. Test scores conclusively and repeatedly put Singapore Primary Mathematics in top rank in international tests! Singapore's genius is in a unique pattern of moving from hands-on demonstrations, to picture drawings (concrete examples with pictures) to the abstract (numbers and symbols) in a natural, easy-to-understand progression. This works!
Questions:
Q- What is the difference between this new version and the old Earlybird Kindergarten US Edition(4 books)?
A- Earlybird Kindergarten Mathematics U.S. Edition (the old version) has been replaced with Earlybird Kindergarten Standards Edition. The four books of the U.S. edition (1A,1B, 2A, 2B) have been combined into two colorful write-in textbooks, A and B. Topics have been rearranged so there is less repetition and a better sequence of concepts. There is now a review for each unit. The textbooks now include a simple glossary, an index, and some "Math at Home" pages. Some pages were added covering solid shapes, patterns and time (days of the week, use of a calendar). Pages were added to the chapters on addition and subtraction to provide additional material on different interpretations of addition and subtraction (e.g. number bonds, part-whole, counting on, counting back). And in addition, the books meet California Schools Math standards.
Q- Where do I start?
A- Kindergarten Standards Edition is a series of two textbooks, A and B . You can start in textbook A with your 4 or 5 year old. The textbook has notes at the bottom of each page with suggestions for introducing and developing the concepts on each page, plus activities, so Teacher Guides or other supplemental materials are unnecessary. If you have finished the Earlybird Kindergarten US edition 1A/1B, you can go into the new Textbook B and you'll be in the right place. In other words, the old 1A and 1B books now equal Textbook A, and the old 2A and 2B books are equivalent of Textbook B.
Q- I notice reference to other supplemental books: Teacher's Guides, Activity books, nursery rhymes, etc. Do I need these?
A- No, you don't. The textbooks A and B provide a complete program--an excellent one. There are instructions on each page of how to use the page, plus activity ideas. It is more than enough! After examining the supplemental books, let me assure you that you do not need to invest your money in them. They are more math than a child of 4 or 5 years old needs. Your child will learn wonderfully well just using the textbooks.
