This video has been re-uploaded after the original stopped working!

Josef Lhévinne was one of the finest pianists in history. Sadly only a handful of recordings exist of his playing. His technique was immense and his art suave and masterly.

This is his 1928 recording of the treatment of themes from Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz by Schultz-Evler. This recording even today remains probably the very finest rendition of this famous virtuoso work ever laid down.

I have uploaded the sheet music here (it is copyright expired): www.megaupload.com/?d=HLFZERUW

  • very nice recording :D very much alive and sparkles ^^

  • @Rastaleus2 It's so sad that people like you have to make these odious comparisons and denigrate fine musicians in order to praise their idol! Can't you just enjoy Lhevinne (or praise his brilliant playing) without these inappropriate negative slurs on others.

  • JOSEF LHEVINNE (13 December 1874 – 2 December 1944) was a Russian pianist and piano teacher.

MOLTO BELLO!!! Thank you for sharing this Wonderful video.

  • What an excellent pianist!!!

  • What a treat for an Austrian from Vienna ~ living in Canada ;o)

    Thank you!

  • I just get the feeling that Lhevinne was the greatest pure pianist ever and could effortlessly have played all the others under the table if he had wished

  • I have always held Lhevinne in the highest esteem for his remarkable musicianship that welds musicality and technique together to move almost any listener- as well as astonish almost any professional. That he was top of his class is no fluke. I would love to have heard he and Rosina play together.

  • Any attempt to compart Lhevinne to ANYONE except maybe to Rachmaninoff or Ogden is obscene and disrespectful to the memory of this giant of the piano! Horowitz???? absolutely vulgar....not worthy to tune Lhevinne's piano and Bolet.???.....should run away quickly, leave the room and maybe take up shoe repair.

  • This is the best-such great rhythm

  • I really like his interpretation of this piece. It's more fluid like you always feel like your moving regardless of the intricate notes in between. Brilliant.
