The word Dance comes originally from the Sanskrit "tanha", which means "desire to live or to move", "joy of living", "tension" and "celebration".
In the Arabic language it is known as raqs sharqi (رقص شرقي; literally "oriental dance") or sometimes raqs baladi (رقص بلدي; literally "national" or "folk" dance). The term "raqs sharqi" may have originated in Egypt. The term belly-dance is a creation of Orientalism, and is first attested in English in 1899, translating French danse du ventre.
Bellydancing as it is known today is very old. It retains its connection to fertility and eroticism by being an indispensable feature at weddings in many Middle Eastern countries, performing the multifold purpose of getting the bride and groom (who may have just met) in the mood, making a blessing of fertility on the couple, and providing entertainment for the guests.
