the NYC school system is a drowning in certifications that produce failing teachers. Now, teaching degrees (other than math and science) for lower /middle schools require masters degrees that are more specialized in a given subject. There is no longer a masters degree in a general subject like English. And, there is no longer a general and straight forward teaching certificate. The reason is to trap people into spending more money on the "college industrial complex", money for paper.

In a "classroom" of 400 students the only individuals who stand a chance to learn are autodidactic--so why spend the $400.00 per credit hour?

I received a better education at my community college, where the state actually paid me to attend. Subsequently I had to move on to a four year university (and used the money to pay for it). Even though my senior college had small classes it still exhibited many of the traits of a large university.
