David Summerford plays a 16th Century Latin hymn on a bowed dulcimer and accompanies himself with mountain dulcimer and bass guitar. The video features a piece of 16th century artwork that shows an instrument that looks a little like the bowed dulcimer. This song was first published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 medieval songs with Latin texts collected by Jaakko Suomalainen, a Finnish Lutheran cleric, and published by T.P. Rutha, a Catholic printer.

  • I really like this!

  • Well done David

So much history for so many years ago (Latin and all). Thanks for bringing this tune back to the present. I wonder if the instrument in the picture became the rebec? I'll have to get out my old Latin book and work on the translation for the lyrics.

    Dave
