the "trick" was to use REAL, measured temperatures (it is in the actual email, in the sentence quoted, but always left out by these global warming skeptics) instead of dendrological data, because for some reason this data has not correlated with measurements since 1960's. Other data sets do correlate (data from coral reefs, glaciers etc. all in all 12 different sets) with temperature. "Hiding" simply refers to decline in the erroneus data set that is caused by an unknown factor

He then has a section about the energy budget discussing "... the flows of energy through the climate system." Etc. It's all right there.

Now I described this as "scientist refering to his published paper in which he gripes that our inability to do energy accounting WITHIN the earth climate system (NOT the net imbalance that we can account for that's driving the recent warming)."
