Video games have become a part of our society and millions of people, both kids and adults, love to play them. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown a connection between obesity and video games. Children who play video games for more than two hours in a day are more likely to become overweight or even obese because they live an inactive life. In defense of video games, they were not the initial cause of children, or adults, living an inactive life nor are they the current reason society as a whole tends to be inactive. It is there stunning graphics, creative story lines, and addicting urge to get to the next level that has kept society glued to the couch. However current technology has allowed video game creators to switch sides in this war on childhood and adult obesity. Exergaming, using technology based interactive activities in order to raise physical activity level, is a new category of video games that focus on interactive fitness programs or an active gaming experience. This new category appeals to current gamers as well as those looking for an alternative way to exercise. Public schools, YMCAs, recreational centers, and private fitness clubs across the United States have already used exergames to help children of all ages increase their physical activity levels.
