  • The territory of Lithuania, at the time, was way further south and a little bit further east than it is now ;)

Territory that is modern Estonia and Latvia was controlled by Teutons. The whole reason for existence of Teuton order was to convert pagans in the area (which is why they fought a lot less with Poland once Poland became Christian)

  • russians are trying to prove to everybody around they are the best and always win. its just part of kremlin propoganda

  • blind me if Poland and teutenic knights were together..who told you that thing? what do you read? that time Poland was too weak to think about bloody northern parts of russia

  • which baltics?? at least lithuania was baptised by poland..never heard that teutonic converted baltics..propably you read not right books my friend or too much internet research:)

  • But what about Peter the Great, who beat the crap out of the Swedes at the Battle of Poltava? That was less than 300 years ago. And the film was yanked and banned by Stalin after he signed the Non-Agression Pact with Hitler in 1939. He only allowed it to be shown again after the German invasion of Russia in 1941.

  • joonte1010 I think that mikolajoskierko is right. The Nevski-battle with the swedes were not a a part of a crusade, it was more of a armed tradeexpedition. Christening of the tavasts in Finland was the goal. This went so fine, that they wanted to expand Finland. They hoped that the russians would be so ockupied with tatars so that they wouldn´t care if Birger Jarl was trying to get more land posessions.

  • Oh, yeah, you're right. The original film was about the Teutonic Knights versus Alexander Nevsky. The defeat of the "Swedes" is an important prelude in that film. In fact, in the original, Alexander must make a choice about whether he is to fight the Mongols or the Germans, so he decides to make a pact with the Mongols. Have you seen this film?

  • Well, yes. they were called Varyags in Rus (Varangs in Bysantym, I think). But the point is, those who came in 1238 from where Sweden is now were not Teutons. Although that is where Aleksandr became known as Nevskiy (the battle was won on Neva).

Teutons came 2 years after and in a strong force and while first invasion was merely about a bit of pillaging, Teutons were hardcore in terms of converting others (they forcefully converted Baltics for example).

  • Sweden wasn't really a country back then, though. It was a set of Norse Kingdoms.

This war was actually fought over trading routes to Byzantium, but the Catholic faith versus Orthodox faith was brought in as a Crusade of sorts for young knights to sign onto.

  • In 13 century in our annals your name "sveyi".

So you named and after 1523. Russians did not know that Swedes then yet was not. :)
