That's the Boomerang Looper. It can do some interesting effects including speed change, reverse and live reverse. Google boomerang looper for more info.

at some point you have to wonder if it would be better to just put the guitar in it's case and buy a synthesiser that can sound like a guitar.

Hmmm... I guess I can see your point. There are those purists who think a guitar should just be plugged straight into an amp but you can also think of effects as a palette of colors.
