I had a couple deer mice living in the house, and though I managed to catch and relocate the adults, it turns out I had a nest of little babies hidden away in my closet as well.

My cat was the first to discover one of these babies, and she brought it to me (thankfully completely unharmed) as a present. Then she brought a second, also completely unharmed. I went on the hunt for the nest and found the other two in a shredded up snowboot. I had captured and put the parents outside a prior, so I took to hand rearing the pups for now. They looked to be about 2-3 weeks when I found them, fortunately mostly weaned (I still keep a home made formula available for them to drink) and on to solid food, but they were probably still somewhat dependent on mommy. I'll be caring for them at least until they are big enough to fend on their own which should be another week or so.

Cute things, very healthy, little fluffballs of energy. It's quite amusing to watch all four of them try and run in the wheel at once. They haven't really gotten the hang of it just yet.

  • Oh, and how big was that container? Was it an ok size for them all to remain in there, with enough room, when they reached 'adult size'?

  • @zmaddyh It was a pretty basic fish tank terrarium with a metal grating top. 10-15 gallon or so, and it did well to house them up until adult hood, but once they got older they got pretty restless and started clinging to the top and chewing on the grating. I released them once they were mature enough using by making a small shelter and setting it and them outside in a secure spot. Good luck with your babies!

  • Very cute video! I'm now unexpectedly fostering 5 babies... much like the ones in your video. Wish I had a habitat like that one to put mine in! :(
