The design reflected the Imperial philosophy of the war; to sign up for the Imperial Air Force was to sign your life away for glory, even if you didn't go for the ultimate Kamikaze troops. The Mitsubishi Zero could be mass produced in high quantities because of it's light and simple design. That didn't make it any less fearsome, though.
