But this was 33 years ago, things were a lot different and the bars weren't as easy to swing/hold on to.

I am sooooooooo stupid I always though a comaneci salto was that move at 0:23 but now I know it is that straddle move she does. Does anybody know what that move is called at 0:23?

The old horse-style vaults didn't provide enough support and spring when the gymnasts pushed off. It was easy to hurt yourself on them because they were so narrow and rigid.

Shaposhnikova started doing giants in '77 (or at least that's the earliest video I ever found).
