Lyrics:
Joy is born of parents poor,
and pleasure of our richer kind.
Pleasure's free, she cannot sing
as sweet a song as joy confirmed.
Pleasure often sleeps by day
and dances by false glare at night.
Joy's a butterfly that loves
to spread it's wings in nature's light.
Joy's a lark that lives alone,
whose ties are very strong but few,
Pleasure like a blackbird roams,
makes much acqaintance, no friends true.
Joy from her heart does sing at home,
with little care if others hear.
Pleasure then is cold and dumb
and sings and laughs with strangers near.
solo..
Joy is born.
Pleasure often sleeps.

David Bowie was playing since the early 60s in groups and putting out records since '66/'67. Though I'm sure the burgeoning krautrock scene in the late 60s as a whole had an impact on Bowie's music.
