@bab8649 I can't speak 100% for this guy, but its not as the act alone is why God should grant you forgiveness. The fact that you do with this with the intention of doing good for others and with contemplation of your own sins is what makes this act 'work'.
You remember and be glad that your sin has not caused death like the one about to come to this chicken. Remind yourself of the consequences of sin- and of the the wonderful results of performing the commandments.
